The distance from Lions' Bridge in the center of Sofia to the village of Negovan is only about 10 km. The village can be easily reached by public transport. Nearly 1,500 people live in Negovan, and if you ask anyone from the older generation about the local cultural center "Kultura-1927", they will certainly remember the good years of the of this magical place filled with children’s performances, a folk dance ensemble and a well-maintained library.
However the building was left unattended for some time, and the space which the books occupied needed some major repairs - the ceilings have fallen, there were leaks and all the equipment was old.
With the municipality’s help, one of the rooms and the roof have been repaired, but this is just the beginning – now that with the help of volunteers the cleaning and arranging of the shelves is done, it is time for them to be repainted and filied with books again. Anna Iliycheva has taken the initiative to do all this work, hoping to bring the cultural center back to life, but as she herself admits, she also needs support for this cause. Do you feel like helping her out in getting the library back on its feet?
How to get involved?
Thanks to the efforts of a team of volunteers, a lot of work has already been done: the old shelves have been cleaned and rearranged, the room - cleaned, and the waste - thrown away.
However, there are still many tasks for the library to start functioning again. You can participate in several ways:
- Carrying boxes of books;
- Looking through, sorting and lightly cleaning books;
- Sorting books on the shelves based on department and genre;
- Refreshing the shelves with paint.
The idea is for the work to be done mainly in the yard of the community center, so that there will be no gathering of many people.
In the village of Negovan, Novi Iskar region. The center is located at 35 Vasil Levski Street, and if you don’t have a car, bus number 20 stops only a minute away. You can catch this bus from Lion’s Bridge in the center of Sofia.
You are welcome any day except Wednesday and Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00. On the mentioned days Anna will be present at the library and will give you a task.
Who is organising it?
Anna Iliycheva from the National Cultural Center "Kultura-1927".
The cultural centers in the rural areas in Bulgaria are increasingly losing their function and instead of being a place where one can create and be part of a community, they become ghostly buildings with beautiful architecture. Help one of them to come back to life and attract people again.
Wear comfortable clothes, that you don't mind getting dirty. Bring along a mask, a pair of gloves, and if you wish - also a hat. The room and boxes are quite dusty.
Nothing special. But well, if you are a passionate reader and know how to sort books, your knowledge will be much appreciated.
In case of bad weather conditions?
If the forecast is bad, do not go - work will be done only in good weather conditions.
Bring water and something to eat. There are a couple of small supermarkets and a restaurant near the library. Anna will try to prepare something small as well.
The boxes and the books are a little dusty, so the mask will have a dual function - to help you not inhale the dust and to comply with the anti-epidemic measures.
Since it a bit dusty and the work is physical, it is good not to be over 60 or not under 16.

It's simple: after the end we send you instructions - follow them. This way you earn points and rise in rank , others get inspired and we're all happy.
