What's this about?

The third edition of the Arms Wide Open Summer School is on the horizon, offering another chance for nearly 100 refugee children to have fun while preparing for school. Throughout July and August, in the heart of Sofia, wonderful individuals aged between 7 and 17 will attend Bulgarian language lessons, visit museums, galleries, and natural sites, engage in sports, dance, and participate in various workshops.

The program provides all-day care for refugee children, offering both formal and informal educational and sports programs, Bulgarian language instruction over two months, creating a safe environment for communication and equal opportunities for development for students coming from different social, cultural, and geographical backgrounds. Simultaneously, it supports their parents in caring for them during the summer months, motivating them to continue their development in Sofia.

What are the tasks for volunteers?

Within the scope of the school, you can:

• Lead a workshop on a topic of your choice – for 3 weeks, at least 6 days, during the month of August.
• Lead a one-time program/workshop/lecture/discussion on a topic of your choice for one of the age groups.
• Lead sports activities.
• Accompany children on excursions.
• Assist supervisors and students during activities.
• Assist in organizing interactive games.
• Provide organizational support.
• You can participate in one or several of the listed activities, according to your availability.

When?

The summer school takes place over eight weeks from July 8th to August 31st, 2024, every working day from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

You can participate for the entire period or for several days. The organizers will assist you in creating a schedule that fits your free time.

You must apply by July 31st.

Why should I get involved?

Your participation in this mission is invaluable to the Arms Wide Open team and will contribute to achieving the following fantastic goals: socialization and communication opportunities for refugee children; acquiring new skills and knowledge; practicing Bulgarian language through experiences and informal educational programs and games; creating dialogue with the local community.

Every hour and every day you donate to the mission helps create a carefree, enjoyable, and fun summer for the children, which will at least temporarily distance them from the feeling and thoughts of war.

Required skills?

Responsible, punctual, stress-resistant, creative individuals with developed critical thinking and the ability to react quickly to problems are sought.

It's important to have sensitivity regarding working with people who have experienced stress during military conflicts.

Experience in working with children is a BIG plus.

Provided transportation?

Not provided. There is a public transportation stop near DK "Sredets", where trolleys No. 1, 2, 3, 4 stop. The "Teatralna" metro station in Sofia is also a 10-minute walk away.

18+
