Take part in a research project on traditional crafts and contemporary design
What?
Two social design students from Vienna are embarking on a journey in search of traditional crafts in Central and Northwestern Bulgaria. Their project aims to explore the potential for the formation of an active community of Bulgarian artisans, designers and social entrepreneurs who could collaborate and use local resources to create modern objects for the household and for everyday life. Explore some of the ideas and inspiration the students have already gathered here.
The first and exploratory phase of the project begins on November 3 in the town of Troyan and concludes on November 15 in Sofia. The researchers are eager to meet local craftsmen, product designers, social entrepreneurs and expats who share their enthusiasm on the subject.
It would be of great help if you could spare an hour or two to:
- talk about your work and experience;
- show the researchers around your workshop;
- introduce the researchers to other places in town relevant to the subject matter;
- (if you are an expat) share your thoughts on the potential development of such a collaboration on international markets.
Old masters and young designers are equally important for the study, as well as expats and social entrepreneurs with (an idea for) a business venture in this direction.

Organizer?
Vera Naydenova and Jan Phillip Ley, social design students at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Austria.
Why?
The researchers believe that the key to a sustainable future for traditional crafts lies in the exchange of knowledge and skills, in innovation and social enterprise. Their ambition is to find collaborators and to help organize a creative community which would develop tradition as a source of economic independence and bearer of cultural values. The success of the project depends on discovering and inspiring active agents in the local communities.
Skills needed?
Join in if you share the enthusiasm and believe in the potential of the idea, no matter what your craft, art, nationality and current occupation is. And, do share the info with potential participants who are not likely to see it on the internet.

Бихме искали да благодарим на всички, включили се в нашата мисия, както и на екипа на TimeHeroes за добрата комуникация и възможността да осъществим така ценни за нас контакти. За съжаление, в рамките на това първо изследователско пътуване не успяхме да се срещнем с всеки един от вас. Но сме благодарни за всички впечатления, опит и насоки, които споделихте с нас – на живо, по телефона или в писмата си.
Особено ценни за нас бяха срещите с Владислав и Кремена Иванови от Голем Дизайн Студио в гр. Търново, майсторите на керамика Румен Георгиев и Ралица Йовкова в гр. Троян, Мариана Проданова и Мая Кръстева от сдружение „Регионален център за култура Фабриката“ в гр. Габрово, Росица Бинева от архитектурно-етнографски комплекс „Етър“, Ирина Аргирова и Дарина Христова от асоциация „Мещра“…
Благодарим и на екипа на „Фабрика за идеи“ в гр. София: за поканата да се запознаем с участниците в „Резиденция Баба“, както и за възможността да посетим организирания от тях форум за социална промяна Empatheast и да придобием впечатления за проектите, които подкрепят в областта на социалните иновации и социалното предприемачество.
Наистина, не очаквахме мисията да бъде посрещната с такъв интерес! Затова се радваме, че останахте открити и готови за сътрудничество, макар и тепърва да формулирахме своите цели и понякога да се лутахме във въпросите си. Предстои ни да разработим адекватна стратегия за развитие на проекта и да потърсим подкрепа от нашия университет, и ще ви информираме как можете да участвате и занапред.
